mount rwenzoriThis 10 day mountain climbing safari will take you to the mountain of the moon. The safari will take you Rwenzori Mountain which is also a world Heritage site. It’s also referred to as a legendary snow-capped mountain with a description of being the mountain of the moon. This mount is covered with mist and ice covered peaks miles away, which offer the breath taking back grounds to this mount. Taking this hike is so adventurous and so memorable for a life experience

For those that are experienced climbers, reaching the height of 5,109 meters at the Margherita peak is also among the most rewarding adventures in Africa. Even though this is the third highest mountain in Africa, many hikers have taken Rwenzori to be the most challenging mountain to climb in Africa.

Day 0: Transfer to Kampala

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Transfer to Kasese district

The guide will transfer you from the accommodation to Kasese and you drive through Queen Elizabeth along way have a stopover to view the royal drums at Mpambire and also take some photos at the Equator. You drive to Queen Elizabeth National park, where you will see many wild animals.

Day 2: Climb to Nyabitaba Hut at 2650metres

Very early in the morning, you have a cup of tea and head proceed to Nyakalengija trail headat about 1600m. You will find porters and the guides and then start climbing to the Nyabitaba hut. You will walk through the matooke plantations along the sharp mountain sides on the foothills of the mountain and also by pass many traditional Bakonjo home steads. Continue along the trail walk and pass river Mubuku and through the land slides. As you cross River Mahoma, climb sharply through the slopes with the bracken ferns and the podocarpus forest to the Nyabitaba Hut where you will sleep and also enjoy your dinner.

Day 3: Ascend to John Matte Hut at 3350m

From the Nyabitaba hut, you follow the trail and slope through the green forest up to the kurt shafer Bridge, right under the river meeting of Mubuku and Bujuku. You will walk through the bamboo forest and cross along a long and tiring greasy stretch whose rocks are also covered with moss. At the Nyamileju rock shelter, you will see mount Stanley and mount Speke before moving into the area that is covered with large heather, the lobelia and groundsel. After, you will reach at John Matte Hut after walking through the fatiguing bog.

Day 4: The Bujuku Hut

From John Matte hut, this trail slopes down and crosses river Bujuku and takes you into the lower Bigo Bigo, were you will view the large lobelians. You wthen jump from one tussock to another even though you will slip into the freezing ooze below. The upper Bigo Bog will give way to the lake Bujuku were you will be able to see Mt Baker in south and to the west Mount Stanley.  The Bujuku hut is located within the shadow of Mt baker and Mt Speke.

Day 5: The Elena Hut at 4541m

From Bujuku, you will go through the bog as you climb the steep sides west of the lake and then cross the groundsel Gully the trail will climb to the scott Elliot pass at 4372m .  at the gully start, there is a metal ladder that will take you over a sheer area after which the trail divides in two. The trail on the right will take you to the Elena hut and mount Stanley and on another slope trail over the large boulders, and the trail on the left will take you to Scott Elliot pass and slopes to the Kitandara lakes.

Day 6: The Margherita peak

For those who need to reach the Marghetita peak at 5109m, you continue to the bottom of Stanley glacier. In order to reach the Margherita summit, the climb will take you 5 to 7 hours depending on the weather conditions and the speed of climbing the mountain. This hard climb will take you over 3 glaciers, ice and the slippery rocks, and the exposed areas with many open sides. Also keep in mind that this climb is for those that are physically fit people and are well experienced. Proceed over the glaciers, cross the Stanley plateau and then continue with the hike.  Adapted to the fog, altitude sickness and the coolly weather, ascent up to the summit of margherita the highest peak of the Rwenzori. You will also organise your return through scott Elliot pass, were there are good views back to Bujuku lake and mount Speke to mount Stanley and down to the Kitandara lakes. After the trail, go through an alpine zone of the sparse vegetation and the rough boulders sloping past the Kitandara lakes for overnight and dinner at Kitandara Hut

DAY 7: The Guy Yeoman Hut at 3260m

From Kitandara, you will climb up the head will as you stretch out from the bottom of Mt Baker and then continue along the southern side of the mountain to fresh field pass. You will get a chance to look into the ‘nearby Congo to the west and Mt Stanley to the north. Proceed along the long trail past the rock shelter that is found at Bujongolo, which is the base camp for the dafari by Duke of Abruzzi in 1906.

Day 8: The Nyabitaba at 2650m

Continue along the path sloping to Nyabitaba hut. The path is so slippery and muddy and it needs careful balancing on the vertical muddy steep rock. More so keep in mind that this is all part of the wonderful adventure up to the mountain.

Day 9: the Nyakalengija trail at 1600m

Slowly slope the muddy trails up to the trailhead, and reach in Kasese close to Lunch time. After drive to Queen Elizabeth and have a boat cruise on Kazinga channel and view many animals including the hippos, the lonely buffalos, crocodiles, elephants, and many bird species.

Day 0: Transfer to Kampala

Wake up so early and then go for a game drive in the morning, have breakfast and then drive back to Kampala where you will reach late evening.
