Kahui Biega National park is situated near the western banks of Lake Kivu in eastern DRC. Lake Kivu also forms part of the border between the DRC and Rwanda. This park is named after the two dormant volcanoes, mount Kahuzi and mount Biega and both of these are found in the park borders and it’s one of the largest national park in the country and covers an area of 6000 sq km. the park is also a UNESCO World Heritage site since the year of 980 for its famous biodiversity of both a rain forest habitant and one of the refugees of the unique Eastern lowland gorillas.
The eastern lowland are also known as the Grauer’s gorilla and is the largest of the four gorilla sub species, these are differentiated by their stocky body, large hands as well as the short muzzle. These also survive on the fruits and many other herbaceous materials.
About Virunga National park
This is the oldest National park and the most biological diverse protected area. The park also covers an area of 3000 sq miles and includes, savannahs, forests, swamps, lava plains, active volcanoes, glaciated peaks of the Rwenzoris and the erosion valleys. These have a quarter of the world’s endangered mountain gorillas, it has the two other great ape species as well as the eastern lowland gorilla and the chimps. The park is a protected area in the world and has three of the great apes. The Okapi is another endangered species that look like a zebra and is closely related to the Giraffe. The park has large colonies of the hippos, forest and the savanna elephants, lions as well as the rare bird species.
The national park is divided into three areas, the northern sector with the snowcapped Rwenzori Mountain that borders Uganda. Along the semiliki River valley, the Okapis can be found. The park’s central sector is also defined by Lake Edward, the Ishasha River Valley and the Rwindi plains.Lake Edward also has 50 species of fish as well as the many bird species. You can also find the hippos, elephants, warthogs, buffalos. The Rwindi plains is also the area that topis can be found. The southern sector is also best known for the mountain gorillas that live on the franks of the dormant Mikeno volcano. Most of the southern Virunga is well covered with the dense forests, which make an ideal habitant for the chimps and the monkey species.
Day 1: From Kigali and drive to Kahuzi Biega National park.
The guide will meet you at Kigali international Airport and then get briefed about the whole itinerary. You will travel to the border town of Cyagungu , where you cross over from Rwanda to the DRC to the town of Bukavu on lake Kivu. You will drive to your accommodation and have dinner; we recommend an early night as the next 2 days of gorilla tracking safaris will be demanding on your energy.
Day 2: Eastern lowland gorilla tracking & transfer to Virunga National park.
Breakfast in the morning and then the guide will take you to the headquarters of the Kahuzi Biega National park, an hour drive along the shores of the lake. You will register and then be assigned the group with a ranger guide and then begin your gorilla trek of the eastern lowland gorillas.
Immediately after the trek, you will then reunite with your guide, who will then take you to the Virunga National park, to the north. You will be taken to your accommodation where you will have dinner. Again, we also suggest an early night, as the next day you will also start so early for the mountain gorilla safari.
Day 3: Gorilla trekking in Viringa National park.
Enjoy breakfast in the morning and then head to the headquarters of the park, you will register and then be assigned a group and the ranger guide. You will then start your gorilla trekking. This can take up to many hours to locate them, you are assigned to after which you will be allowed to spend 1 hour with the gorillas.
After the trek, the guide will take you back to Kigali. If time allows, your guide can give you a cultural and historical tour of Kigali, including the Genocide Memorial center, the tours to Rwanda should include a visit to this monument to the million people that died a few years ago.
