birding in ugandaThis birding and wildlife safari starts and ends in Kampala, you will get chance to explore Murchison falls National park and enjoy many bird species that are found in this area. This national park has got over 450 bird species and covers a size of 3,840 sq km of land. Among these species includes; the shoebill stork which is the most significant attraction with in the park. There are 14 out of the 22 sudan and Guinea species, 7 out of the 12 lake Victoria bird species, 11 out of the 144 Congo Guinea species, 3 of the 32 of the Somali- Masai biome bird species. The un common bird species that are found here include; Fulvous Whistling duck, Pied Kingfishers, Ground Hornbill, Abyssinian Roller, Saddle-billed stork, Red Throated Bee eaters, Goliath Heron, Long-toed Lapwing, the Secretary Bird, and Black-headed Lapwing, and many more.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Birding in Entebbe and the nearby areas

Our company guide will transfer you from your hotel to Entebbe and then start looking for birds in the Garuga and the nearby surrounding areas around Lake Victoria. Among the bird species to look out for include; White headed Barbets, Fain tailed Widow bird, the Blue Monarch, Brown Twin Spots, Striped Kingfisher, Black headed Gonolek Moustached Warbler, Pied hornbill, Diederik’s Cuckoo, Black Bishop, you then have lunch in Entebbe town and after continue to Uganda wildlife Education centre, this area is a home to over 250 bird species including; parrots, the ostriches, shoebill stork, Orange Weaver, Northern Masked Weaver and many more. After, return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight.

Day 2: Transfer to Murchison falls national park

Have breakfast and then continue to Murchison falls national park as you drive through the famous Luweero Triangle. Have a stopover for lunch at Masindi town and after continue to the park which is the most stunning protected area in Uganda and has got over 450 bird species and the wild game.  You visit the top of these beautiful falls and also enjoy scenery with many bird species present. These include; African Pied Wagtail plus swifts, the Rock Pranticoles, and many birds.

Day 3: Morning breakfast & a launch cruise

Have breakfast in the morning and then go for a game drive along the northern banks of the river. You wikll get chance to view many savannah woodland birds including; Bruce’s Green Pigeon, Chestnut Capped Weaver, the Saddle billed Stork, Grey Crowned Cranes, the Silver bird,  Namaqua Dove, Spotted, Morning Thrush, Common Drongo, and many more. You will also see many animals like the waterbuck, elephants, hartebeest, Rothschild, antelopes and many more. Have lunch and the proceed for the launch cruise on the Nile. The birds that will be seen include; Common Squacco Heron, African Pygmy Giant, Malachite, Green backed Herons, Common Squacco Heron, Pied Kingfishers Goliath, the Purple heron, the crocodiles as well as the hippos. after return to the lodge for dinner and an overnight.

Day 4: Transfer to Fort Portal in western Uganda

Have breakfast and the drive to Kibale forest national park , this is an eight hours drive and will take through the arm of the western rift valley that is characterised by many birds that live in the Albertine rift. During this drive, you might spot many species including; the White Browed, Senegal Coucals, Turacos, you will as well view the beautiful escarpments, African villages and the banana plantations that are owned by the local people. You will arrive at fort portal town that looks over the Rwenzori Mountains that describe the mountain of the moon.

Day 5: Birding through the Bigodi swamp & the crater lakes region

Have breakfast and the continue to Bigodi swamp that has got many bird species, as you carry out this nature walk, you will view many birds including; Marsh Tchagra, Papyrus Gonolek, Papyrus Canary, White Winged Warblers, the Great Blue Turaco, and many more. After proceed into the forest where you will have a short walk and view the different types of primates, birds and the tree species as well as the forest birds. Have your lunch at the lodge and then visit the crater lakes region and there you will view many birds including; Yellow Billed Barbet, Blue Headed Coucals, Scaly-throated Honey-guide and the White Spotted Fluff-tail. And many more. Return to the lodge for overnight and dinner.

Day 6: Departure back to Kampala

Have breakfast and then continue to fort portal town and then return to Kampala where you will reach at late afternoon.  You will have your lunch at Mubende and a tour to Nakayima tree before proceeding to Kampala.
